Driving consistency across data visualization so the user can focus on the data
Our advertising technology platform faced a challenge: inconsistent data visualization experiences were hindering users’ ability to quickly interpret similar data. Drawing on my experience teaching data visualization, I led the creation of a standardized data visualization library integrated into our design system, streamlining the way users engage with data across the platform.
This library included Big Numbers, Bar Charts, Line Charts, and Gauge Charts, which were utilized by product teams in Billing, Measurement, and Identity. I continuously refined the library based on feedback from these teams to better meet customer needs. For instance, when the Billing team required a way to show remaining usage, I created a Gauge Chart to display performance against the target.
Additionally, the design focused on helping users identify anomalies and patterns in their data. In collaboration with the Measurement team, I developed a pattern to highlight missing data or values below expected thresholds, aiding Data Scientists in detecting issues before running costly queries on large datasets.
I worked closely with Engineering to select a library that would allow for rapid implementation, ultimately choosing eCharts after evaluating React Charts, React Flow, and Veja. Together with the Lead Engineer, I created a video to promote the new library across the company.
